Identifying Species with DNA Barcoding
DNA barcode identification involves the analysis of short genetic markers by algorithmically comparing them with reference sequences. The most commonly used marker is a region of the cytochrome c oxidase I (COI) gene found in mitochondria but multiple other are used for plants and fungi.
Supported markers: COI
, ITS
, rbcL
, matK
and 18S
.

The Process of DNA Barcoding?
DNA barcoding is a method of species identification using a short section of DNA from a standardized region of the genome
01.
Sampling:
Obtain a small tissue sample from the organism.

02.
DNA Extraction:
Use chemical processes to isolate the DNA.

03.
PCR Amplification:
Amplify the target gene region using Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).

04.
Sequencing:
Determine the nucleotide sequence of the amplified region.

05.
Sequence Matching:
The obtained sequence is matched against reference databases in BOLD
